Bondi has more cafés per square metre than just about anywhere in Sydney, and — let's be honest — plenty of them coast on the postcode. After a decade of living here and far too many flat whites, these are the six I send every visiting friend to. They're spread across the suburb on purpose, so wherever you're staying, one of them is a short walk away.

1. Speedos Café — the ocean-view brunch
Perched above the baths at the North Bondi end, Speedos is the one to beat for a brunch with a view. The corn fritters are the order, and a window seat looking over the swimmers is worth the early start. Get there before 8:30am on weekends or be prepared to wait.
2. Gertrude & Alice — coffee among the books
On Hall Street, Gertrude & Alice is part second-hand bookshop, part café and entirely Bondi. It's the antidote to the see-and-be-seen beachfront — order a chai or a flat white, pull a battered paperback off the shelf, and let an afternoon disappear.
3. Will's Eatery — for the coffee nerds
Tucked on Glenayr Avenue away from the crowds, Will's does the most serious coffee on this list: single-origin pour-overs and a rotating pastry case that's worth the detour. This is where locals who care about their beans actually go.
The rule of Bondi coffee: the further you walk from the sand, the better it gets — and the cheaper.
4. Sadhana Kitchen — plant-based done properly
A long-running favourite on Curlewis Street, Sadhana proves vegan food can be a destination rather than a compromise. The acai and superfood bowls are a Bondi rite of passage, and the smoothies are excellent after a surf.
5. Funky Pies — the cheap, cult feed
Two minutes from the sand on Wairoa Avenue, Funky Pies does vegan pies with a genuine cult following. The "Funky Chicken" routinely sells out by lunch, so go early. It's the best-value bite on this list.
6. The Bucket List — sunset, sand and a spritz
Technically more bar than café, but The Bucket List at the Bondi Pavilion earns its place for the toes-in-sand seating and the best sunset spot on the promenade. Book the deck, order share plates, and stay for golden hour.
How to do Bondi cafés like a local
- Go early or late. 9–11am on weekends is peak chaos at every beachfront café.
- Walk a block back. Quality rises and prices fall the moment you leave Campbell Parade.
- Tap, don't carry cash. Almost everywhere is card-only.
