If you do one thing in Bondi that isn't getting in the water, make it this. The Bondi to Bronte coastal walk is a cliff-top path that strings together the Eastern Suburbs' best beaches, ocean pools and lookouts — and it's completely free. Here's how to do it properly.
The route & distance
The classic stretch runs from the south end of Bondi Beach, past Tamarama ("Glamarama"), to Bronte — about 2.5km one way, taking 45 minutes to an hour at a relaxed pace. It's paved and well-signed the whole way. Keen walkers continue past Bronte to Clovelly and Coogee, turning it into the famous ~6km Bondi-to-Coogee walk (around 2–3 hours).
The best stops along the way
- Bondi Icebergs — start with the postcard shot of the ocean pool against the surf. The most photographed pool in Australia for good reason.
- Mackenzies Bay & lookouts — clifftop benches and, in the right season, a "secret" sandbank beach that appears and disappears.
- Tamarama Beach — small, pretty and a good halfway breather. (Strong rips — admire more than swim here.)
- Bronte Baths — finish with a dip in the ocean pool, then a coffee at the Bronte shops.
Time it for sunrise. The path faces east, the light is unreal, and you'll have the cliffs largely to yourself before the crowds and the heat arrive.
When to go
Early morning is unbeatable — cool, quiet and spectacular. If you're here in late October to early November, the walk hosts Sculpture by the Sea, when the cliffs fill with outdoor artworks (and a lot more people). Avoid the middle of a hot summer day; there's limited shade.
What to bring
- Water, a hat and sunscreen — the path is exposed.
- Swimmers and a towel if you plan to dip at Bronte or Icebergs.
- Comfortable shoes (it's paved but undulating, with steps).
- A card for coffee at either end — you'll want it.
Getting there & back
Start at Bondi (333/380 bus from Bondi Junction). From Bronte, the 378 bus runs back to Bondi Junction, so you don't have to retrace your steps. See where to stay if you want to roll out of bed and onto the path, and our cafés guide for the best coffee at each end.
