Bondi is one of the most accessible surf beaches in the world — beginner-friendly waves at the south end, punchier banks up north, and a surf school that'll have you standing up in a single lesson. Here's how to read it.
Bondi faces almost due east, so it picks up most swells that hit the Sydney coast. The beach splits into three personalities. The south end, below Icebergs, is the gentlest — sandy-bottomed, slower waves and the spot every surf school uses. The middle shifts with the sandbanks and can throw up fun, hollow little waves. The north end, near the surf club, tends to be punchier and is where more experienced locals sit.
The one thing to respect is the rip. Bondi's famous "Backpackers Express" rip runs out near the south corner — exactly where new arrivals tend to wander in. The rule is simple: always swim and surf between the red-and-yellow flags, where the lifeguards are watching. If you're ever caught in a rip, don't fight it — raise an arm, float, and let it carry you out before it releases.
